Mosaic Tiling and Stories

This
is a favourite class among the teen set. Participants can expect to
create a large mosaic garden stone of exceptional quality. Each student
will be encouraged to design a pattern and choose the appropriate tiles
and glass for bringing their image to life. Once the students feel
comfortable cutting and placing tile, Christianne will share with the
group one of Tolstoy’s lesser known novellas, The Forged Coupon.
She anticipates rich discussion at the end of each reading. If you do
not know this book, it is definitely one to put on your list for adult
reading. All materials are included and each student has access to
high-end tools and will learn a variety of cutting techniques (curve
cuts and long pieces as well as the standard square).Ages: 11 years +
Dates: August 18 - 22 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Cost: $240.00 + gst
Beading and Short Stories

This
camp was a favourite last summer. It is designed for both genders.
Christianne’s son, Jamil Hayward, is an expert beader and will be
co-teaching the class. A variety of beading techniques will be
presented at varying levels of difficulty in order to match the beading
experience of the group. Short stories from a variety of collections
will be shared while students work on their projects. Students can
expect to complete at least 5 beading projects while engaging in group
discussions about the stories shared. Instruction on proper finishing
techniques and design principles will be given concurrently. All
materials will be provided and students can expect to work with glass,
silver, crystal and beads made out of natural materials.

Using a variety of tools including a digital camera, children will engage in a hands-on exploration of perspective. Throughout the week, we will examine
What is perspective? What is the value of limited perspective? and What is the relationship between perspective and possibility? Students will delve into the outdoors daily to capture moments in time that they will bring back to the Lyceum to share, provoking thought, wonder and curiosity amongst us. There will be ample opportunities to express our learning through writing and art experiences. Students will also leave with their own “perspective tool box” to continue building their awareness about perspective.

Cost: $210.00 + gst
Poetry Slams & Collage

This class will run in a similar fashion to the poetry slams held in cafes around the city. Students will be given a provocation to get their creative juices flowing, followed by a short period of silence to gather and form their thoughts and passions before expressing them on paper. These poems will be shared with the group after we have established what it means to be a supportive writing group. Each day, provocations will change so that students have an opportunity to be inspired by music, nature, art and rich, juicy words. For the last hour of each session, students will have access to a wide variety of materials to augment and embellish their poetic works.
Ages: 12 years +
Dates: July 21 - 25 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm

Manga Mania
Susan
and Christianne are very excited to launch this new camp for teens
interested in manga and anime. This class will include a blend of film,
drawing, collage and group discussion. Students will have access to the
manga library at the Lyceum and be permitted to borrow a manga novel
each night, to be returned and book-talked the following evening.
Topics for discussion will include the history of manga and anime,
gender switching in manga, manhwa (Korean graphic novels), cyborgs and
robots, fandom and manga in North America.

Sculpting to Shakespeare - King Lear

Students will engage in an in-depth study of
King Lear,
playing at Bard on the Beach this season. We will start with the basic
storyline and progress to scenes in Shakespearean English. Parallels to
other stories, using the
King Lear
motif, will be drawn (ie. Moss Gown, Dear as Salt). Using the polymer
clay, ‘Sculpey,’ students will create a series of sculpted scenes from
King Lear and
choose quotes from the play as captions for these scenes. The finished
scenes will be baked, sprayed with an acrylic finish and mounted on a
large frame to be taken home on the final day. These keepsakes were
very much prized by families who attended this camp last year. Students
and parents may choose to join us for an evening performance at
Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach on Sunday July 20th at 7:00 pm.
