An Autumn Afternoon with Andy Goldsworthy Friday October 8th, 2010 ~ 2PM - 6PM ~ The Lyceum
Kindergarten to Grade 7
If you’re looking for something for your child to do during next Friday’s District Closure Day, look no further! The Lyceum is offering a special fall-themed art program for from Kindergarten to Grade 7. We’ll be exploring the inspirational natural and found object sculpture of artist Andy Goldsworthy and working together to create our own Andy Goldsworthy inspired installation at Jericho Beach.
The class will begin with a discussion about Goldsworthy and his work - including his life, inspiration and a number of his most famous sculptures. Students will then work together to plan a sculpture of their own. During a walk to Jericho Beach they will add gathered materials to previously collected materials provided by the Lyceum and at the beach, we’ll put it all together -- creating a beautiful natural sculpture for beach-goers to admire.
Check out fantastic photos from this event on our blog!
Rachelle Delaney Book Launch
Friday, September 24 ~ 7pm ~ The Lyceum
We are thrilled to host the launch of Rachelle Delaney's new novel, The Lost Souls of Island X. This will be a pirate-themed party, so bring your best eye-patch and/or peg leg and join the festivities! We welcome all Lyceum families and community members to attend this free event.
From her desk overlooking Vancouver’s Stanley Park, Rachelle Delaney has written two novels for young readers. Her first, Ship of Lost Souls, was a finalist for the BC Book Prize and was named one of the Canadian Book Centre’s Best Books for Children in 2010. When she isn’t writing, Rachelle likes to cycle, play the fiddle and travel to far off places.
Praise for Ship of Lost Souls: “Delaney reaches into some of the most classic themes and adventures to create a perfect and exciting parable for modern times... her placing of children in charge of their own destiny amid a lawless society is highly appealing to pre-teens.” —Todd Kyle, CM Magazine

Bookclub Extravaganza September 19 ~ 10am- 3pm ~ The Lyceum
We are open to accept any books you may want to donate to the Bookclub Extravaganza from 9am - 7pm any day between Sept.8th -14th . This event will gather all members of the Lyceum community, friends and neighbours to drink lemonade, share stories, enter contests and shop for books. The idea was born one night when the Bibliophiles (Grade 8 Bookclub) were complaining about the lack of space on their bookshelves at home for new books. (Most of these young people have been in Bookclub since kindergarten or grade one.) One student made a proposal that we organize a book exchange and before any of us realized it a full hour disappeared in discussing this possibility. The idea grew into a community fundraiser with the proposal that proceeds be split between a Lyceum scholarship and a local school library fund. The group decided that a small cover charge and the pricing of $1 per book would be enough to accomplish their goals. As you clean your rooms and bookshelves before school starts, don’t throw out your old books. Instead, put them in a clearly marked box and drop them off at the Lyceum. We are accepting books for all ages, from early childhood to adult.
Congrats to the Wormers Bookclub for Raising $1,252.16 at the Bookclub Extravaganza!
This event gathered all members of the Lyceum community, friends and neighbours to drink lemonade, share stories, enter contests and shop for books at $1 a piece. Thank you to the community, authors and volunteers who contributed to our success!
Christina Leist Book Launch September 12 ~ 3pm ~ The Lyceum
We are pleased to announce the Lyceum will be hosting the launch of Christina Leist's first authored book, Jack the Bear. We welcome all Lyceum families and community members to attend this event. (There is no charge for this event. ) Christina is an established children's illustrator and we've had a longstanding relationship with her here at the Lyceum. In addition to painting our "Sock-Friendly Environment" sign, Christina has worked with our children to illustrate a poem which hangs near the entrance.
In the spirit of the Lyceum going greener, one thing we especially like about Christina's work is that she paints her images on recycled shopping bags. We are lucky to have one of her original Jack the Bear paintings at the Lyceum. "In this charming picture book, Jack the Bear contributes to world peace through the simple gesture of a smile. This special book should should be in every home where young children and youthful spirits reside." - Christianne Hayward
