Shades and Tints of Green
Monday, March 12, 2012

Vincent Van Gogh had a love affair with the colour green. He used it to create sweeping landscapes, and unusual portraits. How does the colour green inspire you? During the first day of our spring break programming, we値l play with the colour green - mixing shades and tints to capture various atmospheres and moods. We値l also learn about the life and work of Van Gogh and use his paintings as inspiration for our own studies in green on canvas.
Green Poetry and Print Making

Tuesday March 13, 2012
During this day, we値l look at the work of some of our favourite nature poets and the techniques they use to capture the world around them in words. Then, we値l write our own nature poetry, celebrating green in Vancouver. Alongside this exploration, we値l learn the basics of linocut printing. At the end of the day, we値l put it all together to create broadsides of our poems, embellished with our prints. Guess what colour of ink we値l be using?
Three Greening Projects in Two Days
Wednesday, March 14 and Thursday, March 15, 2012

What can we do to make Kitsilano more green? In two days, we値l attempt three acts of public greening to add our own personal touch of beauty to our community. We値l create seed bombs to add flowers to an abandoned lot, we値l use the work of Andy Goldsworthy as inspiration for our own green nature sculpture, and we値l create a garden yarn bombing installation on a chain link fence. Three greening projects in two days. We池e either crazy or inspired. Join us to find out which.
Mosses and Ivies
Friday, March 16, 2012
On our final day of Spring Break programming, we値l use the Lyceum痴 extensive non-fiction collection to study the importance of mosses and ivies in our west coast eco-system. Then, we値l venture outside to find and record the places mosses hide and ivies claim. We値l return to the Lyceum to create living art - landscapes made from mosses and ivies. To name our landscapes, we値l create a mystery writing potion that will transform into moss writing.

Our surroundings can influence our writing, either directly or indirectly. During this week we値l venture outside the Lyceum to write in the streets, parks and businesses of our community. Projects will include:
- A beach hop to capture the different ambiences of three local beaches.
- A walk, shoot, and wordsmith session where we値l take photographs and then use them as inspiration for our writing.
- A sonnet walk, where we値l walk 14 blocks, writing a line after each block until we have a sonnet.
- A coffee shop poetry drop, where we値l leave pamphlets of our own writing in a local coffee shops for patrons to enjoy as they sip lattes.
- A boat of words, where we値l write our wishes hopes and dreams on vellum, which we値l fold into a boat seat a lit candle inside and float to distant places from Jericho pier.
Join us for a week of inspiration, contemplation and imagination, as we let our writing roam free in the great outdoors!
Weekend Programs (ages 7 to 17)
Pysanky and Beading
Sunday, March 11, 2012 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
$105

Two of our favourite crafts together on the same day! We値l begin by learning the art of pysanky, Ukrainian egg painting using a wax-resist method. This process takes some patience as eggs need to be immersed in dye and dryed thoroughly before wax is applied to seal in their colour. As we wait, we値l create beautiful jewelry from a vast array of beads, gems and fixings. Pysanky means writing, and throughout the day we値l be talking about how symbols can impart meaning, both in the designs of our eggs and in our beading projects.
Welcome spring in with a bit of colour!
