Using basic faux lead and ink techniques, students will create four scenes from the play on glass squares that can be used as coasters. Students and parents may choose to join us for a matineé performance at Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach on Sunday, July 17th at 1pm.

Yoga, Buddha, and Watercolours

July 26 - 30 (five mornings) • 9am - 12pm

Ages 8-11

$200 + HST

Yoga deepens our connection with self and the world around us, drawing awareness to mind, body and spirit. Your child will explore the creative flow of movement, stretching, and the power of breath to experience both balance and harmony within. Using a collection of Buddha stories as a guide, children will be encouraged to embrace a mindful approach to daily life. Taking inspiration from literature and movement, children will indulge their senses in the tranquility of watercolour painting.
* If you have a favorite yoga mat, please bring it daily; otherwise, foam mats will be provided.

Walk and Jot: Nature Journaling

July 26 - 30 (five afternoons) • 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Ages 8 - 11

$200 +HST

One of the highlights of our writers’ workshops this past year has been our “walk and jot” outings. It is inspiring to witness each child’s passion for writing come to life through these expeditions. Upon returning to the Lyceum, students will gather to share and workshop each other’s pieces. One of our observed outcomes of nature journaling has been a developed desire to use a rich vocabulary in one’s writing. Throughout the week, students will be encouraged to express themselves both poetically and through narrative. Opportunities to illustrate their ideas through visual arts will also be recognized. Photo documentation of these outings will be shared by e-mail at the end of the week.

Journaling and Drawing our way Through the Neighbourhood

August 3  – 6 (four afternoons) • 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Ages 8 - 11

$160 + HST

What makes up our neighbourhood? Each student will be given a journal to write and sketch in as we journey around our community and chronicle meaningful landmarks. We will stop in at businesses and learn a little of their history, documenting as we go. Even if you live far away, getting to know one urban district sets the base for learning about others. We hope that this camp will help students develop a keen eye for observing both the ordinary and unusual.

Getting a Sense of Self and Biographies

August 9 – 13 (five afternoons) • 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Ages 8 – 11

$200 + HST

Each class will begin with a biography about an individual who has overcome  difficult challenges in making a meaningful contribution to humanity. Participants will be guided to note personal characteristics of strength and observe how those characteristics are reflected in their faces. Using mirrors, students will journey through many representations of their reflected image, culminating in a large canvas self-portrait created with acrylics.

Mini Watercolour Beachscapes

August 14  (full-day camp) • 10am - 5pm

This session involves a trip to Jericho Beach and the surrounding duck ponds (sunscreen and appropriate dress required). The day will start with a short introduction to watercolour techniques and an opportunity to create a few practice pieces. Students will create travel watercolour kits to take to Jericho Beach where they will do some of their painting on-site. The final details will be added upon our return to the Lyceum.

Soup, Stories and Sandwiches with Eastern Spice

August 31 (one morning)• 9:30am - 1:30pm

Ages 8 - 11

$50 + HST lunch included

Storytelling is always best on a full stomach! We’ll begin our day by creating a delicious soup, and once we get it simmering, we’ll indulge in a relaxing day of storytelling. Why is storytelling so important? What makes a good story? How do you keep your audience interested when telling a story? Christianne will share storytelling techniques and tell some of her favourite Western/Eastern-themed stories. Then, participants will get a chance to tell stories of their own. Once the soup is ready, we’ll put our creative skills to work in the kitchen, creating our own sandwiches from mouth-watering, Western/ Eastern-themed ingredients. As we eat lunch, we’ll continue telling stories, because after you get started telling stories, it’s very hard to stop!

Beading to Short Stories

Students can expect to complete at least five beading projects while engaging in group discussions about the stories shared. Instruction on design principles and proper finishing techniques will be given concurrently. Materials will be provided and students can expect to work with beads made out of glass, silver, crystal and beads made out of natural materials.
*Bead-hungry adults are welcome to join their children in this class!
