Christianne's Lyceum of Literature and Art

Flights of the Imagination

Programming at the Lyceum will soar to new heights in March with an exciting week of Spring Break workshops that focus on imagination and birds.  Through thought-provoking writing prompts, in-depth literature explorations and high-quality art projects we’ll plumb the depths of two of literature and art’s most enduring inspirations.

Our explorations will take us to lands of our own creation, and to the coastline that makes up our own backyard.  It’s a week of imagination, contemplation and aviation you won’t want to miss.

Create a Kingdom!
Monday March 8  (1 Class)

If you could create your own kingdom, what would it look like? What would the laws be ? What would your people eat?  Do for fun?  Through literature provocations, writing prompts, and art projects we’ll create our own kingdom and people it with everything and anything we can
imagine.

The Places My Imagination Takes Me
Tuesday March 9 to Thursday March 11 (3 Classes)

Inspired by a number of high-quality picture books, we’ll begin by discussing our imaginations. What do we like to imagine?  Where do our imaginations take us? From our discussions, each child will create a visual representation of his or her imagination through collage on canvas.

What Does Your Monster Look Like?
Friday March 12  (1 Class)

A clay workshop, with claws!  We’ll read picture books for inspiration and then design our own monsters, beginning by writing their fascinating biographies, and ending when we fashion their likeness in clay.

Poet-gami!

Beginning with a collection of words and images inspired by birds, we’ll fashion our own incredible bird poetry.  Then, we’ll come full circle by folding the poetry we’ve written into  a variety of bird shapes.  A fun and relaxing day that’s guaranteed to inspire!

Drawing and Writing with the Birds
Tuesday March 9 to Thursday March 11 (3 Classes)
Fee: $140 (Includes cost of a shadow box)

We’ll begin the workshop by walking to Jericho beach, identifying birds as we go.  Once there, we’ll sketch birds in words and images.  Each child will use these initial sketches and notes to create further art studies and creative writing pieces the following day.  Finally, the children will integrate their learning by making an intricate and beautiful shadow box on Thursday.

Flight of the Hummingbird

Fee: $45

We’ll begin by talking about the role birds play in West Coast storytelling.  After exploring some beautiful First Nation picture books, each child will make a visual representation of a bird using pearl buttons on a felted placemat.
