Five Mini Publishing Projects

July 12 – 16 (five mornings) • 9am – 12pm

Ages 6 – 8

$200 + HST

Five publishing projects in five days?  Is it even possible?  It is, when you think up new and creative ways to present your writing.  From poetry bracelets, to word-covered lanterns this camp is more fun than you would think possible with pencil and paper in hand. Children who attend this camp will produce five writing pieces they’ll be proud to share, and five unique ways to share them. A great choice for writing fiends and reluctant writers alike.

Down the Rabbit Hole with Alice

July 19 – 23 (five full days) • 9am - 4:30pm

Ages 7 - 9

$400 + HST

Alice laughed: “There’s no use trying,” she said; “One can’t believe impossible things.”
“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Join us as we venture down the rabbit hole with Lewis Carrol’s classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  As we read the novel together, we’ll engage in wide-ranging discussions on everything from mathematics to the seriousness of nonsense. We’ll explore several editions of this much-loved book, looking at how illustrators have tackled the formidable task of depicting Wonderland. We’ll also use the novel as a jumping-off place for curiouser and curiouser writing and art projects of our own. From the Mad Hatter’s tea set, to our own nonsense poetry, to a full-sized canvas depicting Alice’s descent down the rabbit hole, we’ll revel in the magnificent characters and surreal images that have made Carrol’s novel stand the test of time.

Nature Painting and the Impressionists

August 9 – 13 (five mornings) • 9am -12pm

Ages 6 – 9

$200 + HST

We will venture outdoors, weather permitting, to sketch images from nature and return to do acrylic studies back at the Lyceum. These studies will be used as preparation for a large canvas painting to take home at the end of camp. Students will be encouraged to see nature as the subject of a painting, rather than a backdrop for another scene. In the spirit of the Impressionist movement, students will be prompted to capture what they see without idealization. Stories of great impressionists, including Monet, Van Gogh, Manet and Renoir, will be shared to inspire students’ work.

Exploring the Environment and Supporting Sustainability

August 16 – 20 (five mornings) • 9am - 12pm

Ages 6 - 8

$200 + HST

Your child will be exposed to literature that will stretch their minds and provoke deeper thinking about the world around them. Books are selected to challenge binary thinking patterns and to encourage exploration of “possibilities.” Sojourns into city green spaces will support both the reading and art inquiries of this camp. High-end art projects will support themes explored in the literature studied.
