Blossoms, Bubbles and Butterflies
June 20 - 24 (5 mornings)
9:00 am to 11:30 am
Ages: 3 - 5 • $190 + hst (2.5 hrs/class)
In this nature-inspired workshop, we’ll look at butterflies and blossoms in literature and art, then try our hands at identifying the ones we find as we wander through the neighbourhood around the Lyceum. Through books like The Prince of Butterflies, Waiting for Wings, Hurry and the Monarch, Rose’s Garden and Martha Says it With Flowers, we’ll discuss how authors and illustrators find inspiration in the beauty around them. A day of blowing bubbles in the park - a special outing that will be reflected in our art projects - rounds out this magical five-day camp.
Insects in the City
June 20 - 24 (5 afternoons)
1:00 pm to 3:30 pm
Ages: 3 - 5 • $190 + hst (2.5 hrs/class)
Each day we’ll share some of our favourite bug-related stories to engage your preschooler’s sense of humour and natural interest in the world of insects. Then, we’ll take trips into the outdoors, where children will be encouraged to observe their insect neighbours closely while developing a respect for each critter’s place in the urban eco-system. Children will have the opportunity to work with a variety of media to explore ways of representing their observations. Both abstract and realistic expressions will be embraced and supported.
Go Green with Recycled Art
June 27 - 29 (3 full days)
9:00 am to 3:30 pm
Ages: 4 - 5 • $295 + hst (6.5 hrs/class)
Students should bring a packed lunch
Get your child ready for full-day Kindergarten with this special three day camp! Inspiring environmental awareness in our children starts with an appreciation of the beauty and magic found in nature. In this camp, we’ll engage children in that magic using a variety of picture books and “looking” walks. We’ll also explore easy ways that little ones can help to keep their community green. Each day we’ll take what we’ve learned and create beautiful and functional art from recycled materials. Going green has never been so much fun!
The Incredible True Story of Morphing Beetles
July 11 - 15 (5 mornings) • 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Ages: 3 - 5 • $225 + hst (3 hrs/class)
Egg to larva! Larva to pupa! Pupa to beetle! This week-long camp focuses on metamorphosis. A selection of picture books that tell stories around insect life cycles will be shared, giving participants a sense of the various stages that make up these remarkable transformations. A variety of beetle larvae will be available so that children can observe the process they are learning about first-hand. A metamorphosis-themed art project will complete the week, giving students a memento of this transformative camp to take home with them.
We Are All Artists
August 2 - 5 (4 mornings)
9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Ages: 3 - 5 • $180 + hst (3 hrs/class)
During this week, children will explore their identity as artists through literature and relevant art experiences. Picture books will be used to expose children to the varying struggles and celebrations artists experience in their journey to express themselves. Parallels will be drawn to the personal challenges each child experiences in expressing his or her own ideas, dreams and unique style. We will encourage children to approach a range of artistic expressions with open and curious minds. Children will have the opportunity to work with a variety of paints, collage and sculpting materials. We will build a mini-gallery as the week evolves and invite parents to share documentation of our creative process.
Something Fishy is Going on in the Ocean
August 2 - 5 (5 afternoons)
1:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Ages: 3 - 5 • $180 + hst (3 hrs/class)
During this camp we will look at the concept of ocean sustainability, both through stories that feature ocean life and through discussions about the various ways our oceans are being threatened. We’ll look at what we can do to help, including water conservation and the work of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program. A beautiful ocean-scape art project will be created as a reminder of the role we all play in preserving the planet’s oceans.
Getting to Know Vancouver’s Illustrators
and the Books They’ve Created
August 22 - 26 (5 mornings)
9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Ages: 3 - 5 • $225 + hst (3 hrs/class)
In this camp, we’ll discuss the work of several local illustrators. We’ll examine a number of books by each illustrator for stylistic consistencies and discuss how different visual styles fit particular stories. Students will have the opportunity to try their own piece of art in the spirit of each of the illustrators we’ve studied. On the final day of the camp, we’ll invite all of the illustrators and parents to the Lyceum for a special art sharing and tea party. We’ll get the chance to see some of the illustrators work, ask our pressing questions, and share the work we’ve created over the course of the week.
